Of course the press were there and our Funders, this shot was requested for the Co-op communiy trust fund, no doubt it will be appearing in a newsletter soon! We also took everybody on a trail to view the second part of the Mosaic on Patrick Roddy court.

The group also sold four individual mosaic panels which capped off a perfect day. Thankyou to all who attended this event and showed your your support!

Beyer Peacock Public Arts Mosaic Opening

Gorton Visual arts have been hard at work again creating a huge public arts mosaic celebrating the workforce of the Beyer Peacock factory in Gorton. They have interviewed past employees, researched with the help of MOSI and used the talents of Gorton local history group to create this huge piece of public Art! Forget B of the Bang  Gorton Visual arts have woven these stories into a fantastic feast of imagery including the famous  forge, drawing office, big bertha and the ever present  foremen in pot hats! The mosaic is over 10m in length and has taken over 6 months to complete mainly by elderly local residents. The mosaic is so big it has been installed on the exterior walls of two sheltered accommodation units that helped to create it!  This mosaic celebrates the heritage and legacy of Beyer Peacock and the existence of the thousands of people who worked there .

The opening event will take place between 11.30 and 12.30, we will be joined by the Bellevue Brass Band and original Employees from Beyer Peacock. A few words will be spoken at 12 o clock and the Mosaic will be officially opened by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Manchester..The brass band will play whilst traditional refreshments are  provided including Manchester Tart  and Eccles Cakes.

This project has been supported by The Oglesby Trust, Co-op Community Fund, Manchester City Council and Communities for Greater Manchester and Eastland Homes

“And so it begins” A visual textile collective piece of artwork, in the form of 11 football shirt’s containing screen printed and embroidery imagery relate to the Gorton Origins of Manchester City Football Club.  The finished shirts will be exhibited and a winning design used for a local under 16 football team.

The Project will give up to 20 Elderly and isolated residents of Gorton the opportunities to share and develop their artistic skills with other members of the local community including young people. We hope to exhibit the finished football shirts at Manchester City Football Club or the Whitworth Art gallery textile department.  This project aims to combat the assumptions of what elderly people are capable of and especially in an Arts deprived area such as Gorton.

With the Majority of the panels near completion we have begun what has turned out to be the back-breaking installation. The frame-work has been securely fitted with Anchor bolts and has taken two days to complete. The next step is to begin attaching the panels in sequence and making sure they securely attached, this is no mean feat as each panel is extremely heavy! Once we have the Panels in place we will then begin the labour intensive task of covering over the joins and fittings and making the mosaic whole again!

We have an opening date now of Saturday the 6th of November 11.30 till 1pm, All welcome, more details to follow…

Well the Mosaic project is well and truly under way, with the majority of the larger Panels started if not completed. The Group has had outreach workshops with Gorton’s Young at Heart and Residents of Patrick Roddy Court and Thomas Regan Court. We have interviewed local residents that were employed at the Beyer Peacock Factory and heard had some fantastic stories. We have also had regular visits from Frank Rhodes from Gorton’s Local History Group who has been a mine of information and imagery regarding the project.
